As a child I would often fall asleep to the music of Mr. Sandman and the Beatles. All day long I would be singing those songs as I had a huge collection in my brain. It is no surprise to me, now that I am a teacher of meditation, how those songs did affect my moods.
Just as the reign of the Flower Children came to a close in 1969, I stepped out of my Graduate studies at San Francisco State University, to study with the Master, Yogi Bhajan in Los Angeles. He propelled me and my music on a 3 month meditative sojourn with his wife Bibi-ji, and a group of 7 women, to India at the Golden Temple in 1973.
The challenges of meditating in 120 degree temperatures brought me to zero so I could "get" the life lesson of this place. Known for its reflective and healing waters, the music at the Golden Temple never stops. Here the music of the "Shabd" gradually transformed my life and gave me a depth of fulfillment and a new focus in life. Not only did I start learning to sing this new language of Gurbani on my Guitar, but we were invited to perform. In schools, Temples, homes, even in the foothills of the Himalayas we performed before masses of thousands to millions of people of Northern India.
The next 30 years was punctuated by studies with Indian musical masters, performing and teaching kirtan (devotional music) and sacred language to adults and children. Yogi Bhajan would call me and say "Kiranaaaa.... is your suitcase ready?" We traveled on so many tours back to India and then to South Africa, Canada, USA, South America, Mexico and Europe on a real Spiritual Magical Mystery Tour.
Singing and teaching the 2,000 year old Indian science of music called "Raaga" with the modern transformational technology of "Shabd" (as taught by Guru Nanak) has become my focus in producing these albums.
It is only by the Grace of God and Guru and Yogi Bhajan that I have the ability to share this sacred gift with you. May you find happiness, harmony, upliftment, gratitude and grace. This is my prayer for all of you.
