What is Gurbani
The sacred literature of Sikhism is called Gurbani which means the Guru's word - A Song message - as enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib. Gurbani is a great wealth of hymns, devotional songs and poetic compositions, written by the Gurus of the Sikh Religion and many other saints and sages of in India from 1400 - 1600 AD. These Holy Scriptures were compiled into the Siri Guru Granth Sahib which acts as the living Guru of the Sikh Religion. These compositions teach of the oneness of God and Creation and how to acheive harmony in daily life.
Gurbani is written in a powerful, meditative system of words called "Shabd". Shabd is a meditative form of music that gives the experience of lightness of being. Absorption in the Shabd will diminish the ego and allow inner clarity and guidence to the conscious mind. Often Shabds are sung in the traditional musical format of Raags of Northern India. These Raags have been constructed around the Shabd to create a deep and resonating sound current that penetrates directly into the brain and gives the listener the direct experience of the Shabd.
There is nothing more important as a means of healing the human body through the soul, and nothing that can be of greater use and importance on the path of spiritual attainment, than sacred music. As every word that comes out of one's mouth has its effect not only upon one's body, but also upon one's mind and spirit, so can the kind of music one hears heal and prove to be of great advantage to oneself. Working with sacred music or the music of the soul is not only a medical process of consciousness, but also, it is a psycho therapy that enables you to get rid of sickness.
